A friend has asked me to take him backpacking, and I was thinking of a quick, easy trip to Donohue Pass and back. Just wondering how much snow is likely to be there the 3rd week of June.

I went over the pass on the 1rst week of July 5 years ago when hiking the JMT and it was fine. So it seems likely that it will be OK this year with our lighter than average precipiation; but just wanted to throw this out there and see what others think.

That's a really popular assumption, resulting in a lot of trip reports that go something like "well, we turned around at..."

Don't bank on all the snow being gone. If you're not comfortable with it go the other direction - visit Waterwheel Falls, California Falls, etc.

You'll be fine.

Thanks, yeah, that's what I figured. There's a really neat basin (cirque whatever, not really sure of the proper name) just shy of the pass that has incredible views down into the canyon.

But from your picture of the pass, I'm sure that you know that already. In fAct, I'd bet that you have a picture of it, too.

Oh, and I really like your second picture...but isn't it backwards?

Lyel Glacier ?

nahhh

looks like the first hanging valley about 2/3 up the north side grade to Donohue where you get your first wet no bridge crossing
JMT crosses the large lake in the center from right to left at the outlet which is at the top end at the center of the photo. From there you can see the line of the trail going to the left

I'd say the photo spot was about HERE

Mr Tom. I presume you didn't watch his buddies video.
I wasn't trying to quiz or dupe you. Just trying to show the hanging valley
he was talking about in a different angle of the dangle.
(I wish I had one further east... but don't yet... )

Here's from top of Lyell for you:

Chick-on: I swear, you amaze me with your ability to pull up pictures from seemingly any spot mentioned. Not only that you've taken them, but that you have them catalogued well enough to find them.
