I am listening to an interesting series of lectures on Victorian England, and one of the lectures has been about the key scientists of the age, including Charles Lyell, after whom a few features in Yosemite are named. But I was surprised to learn that he pronounced his name Li-YELL, with a clear accent on the second syllable.

I've always pronounced it, and heard it pronounced as if it were a cotton: Lisle.

Any other names you can think of Yosemite that have a similar confusion?

Good point. Having known one of his descendants who was named for him....he pronounced it Con-NESS.

Balzaccom, that day we passed each other on the trail near Little Devil's Postpile, my daughter and I later passed a family asking if this was the way to GLEEN aw-LEEN...

The proper pronunciation of Merced also is not intuitive for many from outside California.

There's always a debate over prounouncing "Nevada" as in Nevada Falls or Sierra Nevada. The residents of that state say it's pronounced - Na-va-duh. Not Na-vahhh-duh.

It should be pronounced as NEH - va (as in bad) - duh, and not NEH - vuh (as in duh!) - duh.

Yes, not the Spanish pronunciation.
