"expert" advice on fires.....unbelieveable

This video pretty much violates every principle of LNT, as well as suggesting that you break the law in most national forests and national parks in the West. Gotta wonder who edits these things. And who the "experts" are who suggest creating a new fire ring where none already exists. Released in the middle of the worst fire season in history in the West.

My understanding is that this is a video on fire making in a survival situation only. I watched the video but did not see any suggestion regarding breaking the law in national parks. Where was that reference?
I personally am against any fires in the back country but if you absolutely have to make one to keep from freezing to death then do what you have to do.

Yeah--but if you are going to address the issue of building a fire in a survival situation, does it make sense to focus on building a nice fire ring? Or would it make more sense to talk about where you might possibly find dry tinder and fuel in a survival situation? This guy isn't in a survival situation---he's making a nice fire on a warm sunny day in the woods. And if it WERE a survival situation, the techniques he suggests won't work, because all the fuel on the ground will be wet.

They presented this as a "survival fire", but its really nothing more than a campfire. So...yes, if this is almost any area in the western US they broke the law by building a new campfire ring.

IMO the video is ridiculous. Of course, I think their continuing "survival skills" series is absurd, yes survival skills are important, but the need to practice them should be rare, and that's not how they seem to be presenting it.

The kindling should be super-dry. But I am lighting this thing because it's dumping rain and 40F? Or snowing? Yes, I can find dry wood underneath a rotting log...do they say any such thing? And...they discuss soft wood for starting the fire versus hard wood if I want to cook. But I don't have my stove? I'm cooking? And this is Leave No Trace? And the whole thing is lit with a match, struck against rock, which would literally be impossible in a wet-weather survival situation?

EDIT: The video is also ridiculous because it requires Flash to view and not HTML5, and Flash requires security updates every few days because of course. This is not a LNT problem, though...
