Backpackers Campsite during winter?

Hey Folks,

Was planning on backpacking from GP road and was wondering what you guys would recommend for first night "accommodations" before starting on the trail. I come from the LA area and usually stay at the backpackers campsites at TM and the Valley but feel that they are quite a distance from GP.Are there any other alternatives?

The backpacker's campground in the valley is closed in winter--you are supposed to instead camp at Camp 4. The Wawona campground is open all year and isn't too far from Badger Pass and would be on your way from LA if coming in via 41.
