Happy Birthday Birdie!
April 08, 2016 07:39PM
Please join JKW and me in wishing Chick-on is looking at you! a happy birthday!

I'd like to thank him for many, many wonderful fun-filled weekends of boating...

Boating: being buoyant on liquid water.

...more boating...

A rather Lost expression...

...and of course scrambling around all corners of Yosemite looking for, well, anything new and interesting...

Proving the blind squirrel/nut theory, he found this one fair and square....

...while we'll consider this one a birthday present.

He's helped us appreciate that all of Yosemite is wonderful, in it's own way, every last corner...

Maybe even the ones 800' down steep slopes that don't have 1905 markers near them.

...and that you should always watch your back(pack)!

He's been having problems with pickles recently.

Looking forward to many more fun-filled years exploring Yosemite with the one and only Chick-on is looking at you!!

Note the bridge: this one counts for Trail Quest. Period.

Oh, and thanks for all the pizza slice!

I am not nearly so clever with words as Basilbop...

Words fail me. All I can say is THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Bowing to his greatness for an awesome year of hiking, boating and exploring! So much fun! And even when the going gets rough, it's always a pleasure sharing the experiences with you!

And now that I've committed to the Trail Quest, I hope I have many more miles to look forward to of your pranks, jokes and jibes! They keep me going through the sometimes steep and slippery, but often sublime Yosemite and Sierra backcountry.

And one sober comment to all: I've met very few who care so deeply about protecting and preserving the park and the wilderness, leaving as little trace as is possible. He truly loves the land he has gotten to know so very well. Anyone who reads this site regularly knows how much he offers to us all with his experience and advice. That alone deserves much gratitude.

A belated* Happy Happy Birthday to you, Great Pink One! drinking smiley Birthday Cake Chick-on avec les pieds

*Chick-on's actual birthday was a few days ago, but we were busy on the sixth day of backpacking knocking out about 14 miles! Awesome day! Awesome Trip! Thanks again!

We talked about it on the way down... but decided to have Noodles N Chicken Mountain House in the

asleep to TV in the tent... (something I have perfected)

Along that lines... was gonna post this on your Za thread.... but ur pictures disappeared...

You need a pan that spreads out the heat--like a reasonably thick aluminum pan. Most backpacking stoves have very focused flames. They also sell diffusers (corrugated metal plates) that help a lot by spreading out the heat from the stove (pro tip from OD!).

Edit: we had some of the best backpacking pancakes ever after we started using OD's diffuser!

Thanks BB/ChickOn/Kevin. I guess I will just stick to oatmeal or cous cous as I only carry a Soto micro regulator stove and Snow Peak cookset. Was trying it at home with the titanium pan on cooking range and realized that I need a thick pan.

Those pancakes look delish though...

Happy Birthday!

I still remember the closest I ever came to seeing Chick-On. We were on our way UP airplane gully after an aborted Tenaya Canyon daytrip trek that brought us down, using ropes, Pywiack Cascades. A lone person passed us heading down and I said, "Are you Chick-On?" For you had said you were doing the Canyon the next day. Alas it wasn't you---and least the person who I met said "no". If I recall correctly, you were in the canyon the next day and passed the big group that guy was with.

I still dream of completing the Canyon with you. Don't get too old too quick! (I'm speaking to myself mostly!)

No bodily abuse...at least on that bit...

But I just got home after four days with the Pink One.. And my legs are scratched up and I pushed myself emotionally and physically as we explored unexpected "trail" and backpacked in the dark (something I actually normally like to do), and started out in the sleet (which thankfully turned to almost real snow on Friday evening). We were in various parts of the park over the course of the days, Trail Quest and Boundary Marker hunting...

And for all the face-slapping branches, the soggy meadows and leg-scraping buck-brush, I left happy and with a huge grin!

Basilbop and I will be very busy for the next couple of days, but hopefully we can get a report out.. But no matter what, huge thanks to Chick-on and Old Dude for yet another fun and adventurous trip!

Well... Define bad...

Heavy rain hit us around 1:30 in Wawona, and by the time we were passing through Yosemite Valley, there was lightning and light hail. By the time we were at the trailhead 2000' higher, we had sleet, slush and hail.

Once we were hiking though, it wasn't bad!!! That's because the bad bit was the indecision on whether to continue with the final leg that day. But the forecast held, and we had a gorgeous morning!

Hope u were in a relatively safe spot during the lightning storm. I love them when I feel we have done our best at locating a relatively safe spot... But it sounds like it was intense...Looking forward to your trip report too!

Chick-on's comment below clarified where you were and yes, that's a pretty abuse-free zone smiling smiley although, ironically, I got one of my worst old-road injuries the first time I hiked that segment (threw my leg over a downed tree and smacked the back of my calf onto the stubby but still very sharp remains of a small branch that had broken off the tree-trunk...no infection and certainly not bad in the bigger scheme of things but I had a minor scar there for quite a long time). Just goes to show you that, with enough focus (or lack thereof), you can injure yourself pretty much anywhere! eye popping smiley

It was continuation of Elevenmile. It only went for a very bit more...
Basilblop pointed out another bit s and e of there that needs exploration though.
Hopefully can get there soon. When that happens will make sure to update

Basilblop pointed out another bit s and e of there that needs exploration though.

That is quite a lovely stretch and definitely one of the easier sections (including the spur down to the meadow), even if all the construction up at the Henness Ridge Rd end has destroyed a lot of the charm and isolation of that bit. A few years ago, I hunted around in the area where the old road comes back up to the current alignment but couldn't find anything resembling a continuation (although, at the time, I didn't realize the extent to which they sometimes obliterated the old road where it crossed paths with the new so I may not have looked far enough up the hill). I'm assuming, btw, (and your "s and e" comment seems to confirm this), that the continuation of the old road is above (i.e., east of) the current alignment after the Elevenmile segment comes back up to the current alignment (certainly seems like it should be, given the angle of approach)).

On our trip last year, I actually didn't get to do any hunting around for OWR segments (of the bits of which I'm aware, there are only 2 short segments north of Mosquito Creek that I haven't hiked yet). Instead, I started exploring sections of the Alder Creek trail and the area up around Empire Meadow...both of which were new to me. I got caught up exploring the old railroad bed that leads out to Alder Creek Falls and also the road out to Deer Camp (both of which I stumbled on quite by accident while hiking in that area).

Alder Falls has been on my to-do list but since I didn't expect any water there in September, I wasn't planning on doing it on that trip and was actually quite surprised when I ended up there! When the trail comes up to the RR bed, I was quite surprised...I knew there was a lot of lumber company RR'ing in that area so wasn't surprised that the RR was in that area but didn't expect to see it as part of the trail. Interestingly, when you first hit the RR bed (coming up the Alder Creek trail from Mosquito Creek) the section to your left is VERY clear but immediately to the right, it just disappears into a massive tangle of overgrowth. I'm curious where the other end of that is but we didn't have time to hack through it on that trip. Definitely want to explore this area a little more. (*)

The road to Deer Camp was a total surprise to me, however. We hiked in from the GPR, through Westfall Meadow and along Alder Creek drainage and I had no idea this road was down there. I followed it off to the right a little bit (the sign says it goes to Wawona but I wasn't able to figure out where it comes out down there (unless it stops being a road and deteriorates into a trail). We took it out as far as Deer Camp (and that direction is clearly much less well-maintained), had some lunch and then headed back.

(*) Oops, I was just about to start inserting some photos but it appears that Picasa no longer lets you share photos. Seems they've replaced Picasa with Google Photos (at least my old pictures have auto-migrated there) but I need to confirm a bunch of settings about extent-of-visibility before I start sharing stuff. Once I figure that out, I'll just do a (long-overdue) TR for that part of the trip (posted a couple days of the trip several months ago but then lost track of things).

It's still possible to share (and even upload) photos to Picasa via their web site. Log into your Google account (first) and then just go here:

https://picasaweb.google.com/home

(The one thing one cannot do now on Piscaweb is create NEW photo albums.)

Thanks, Peter. I thought I was logged in but tried again and noticed that I also had to edit the album visibility (it defaults to just me). I don't want to hijack this thread for my TR (at least no more than I already have!) so I'll just post the album link here and try to get some separate posts up about the trips soon. FYI, the trip to Deer Camp is photos 125-179 and the trip to Alder Falls is in photos 180-247.

Alder Falls has been on my to-do list but since I didn't expect any water there in September, I wasn't planning on doing it on that trip and was actually quite surprised when I ended up there! To right... it doesn't go very far... I haven't found much else right there... the trail is not where it is on USGS...

West of the Westfall connector... it's road all the way to Yosemite West... the trail to Wawona zigs south off of it...
and hooks up with the old rail...

Anywho... there's LOTS of rail in that area... and also around Crane Flat...
Have you seen this:

Here's your Alder post:

And this:

(link doesn't work... will PM)

Anyzoo... I need to update the rail map... make an overlay... there is loads
of delicious railbed to explore... have stumbled into a few near Crane
and with Rim Fire... now is good time to look imo... or soot...
smiling smiley
As mentioned previous also need to redo Old Wawona overlays...

Have fun exploring. Sorry I can't find all the stuff posted about rails and such.
Lots of great info out there and some nice books.

Whenever I get around to the map goofing I will post or PM you.
I know you enjoy.

Take care

Yes, I remember those posts...now that I've actually been there, they resonate that much more with me. Definitely want to get back to Alder when the water's flowing. BTW, since it was bone dry when I was there, I couldn't be too sure how feasible to go beyond the falls on that trail. Does the trail actually go through the water or does it cross at a higher point?

Happy Birthday Chick-on!
Thank you for all the good hiking advice over the years- always correct.
And thanks for guiding me on how to post a photo to this forum.

This would be a distant sighting of the rare flightless bird and his boating party.

Very late with this belated good wish for Chick-on.

Discovered off-trail hiking a few years ago. First fully x-country adventure planned was Cherry Creek - selected because there's so much granite it's obvious from Google satellite view. That's all I knew about it. Searched online for somebody that may have gone there.

Found this site. Learned a lot. Never met Chick-on. He posted, PM'd, shared GPS tracks, advice, more. Partial fail on first attempt but since have been back and done CC proper, North, West and East forks - and surrounding areas.

Still haven't met Chick-on in person. But wow, he is real, knows his stuff, and shares - a lot.

All the Sierra is wonderful. Cherry Creek is very special for me. Might not have found out just how special without his help.

Thanks Chick-on. Happy Hatching Day.

Thank you so much.

Appreciate very much the kind words.

Have fun out there.

Our paths have crossed already. Maybe they will meet someday.
If only for a hello.

Kindest Regards

Thank ewe Mr. Jim. We think of you often. It was only one trip. But it was so very memorable.
We hope you are doing well and can someday do a reunion hike with the gang... even if only a small dayhike.
Wish you the best always.
Your friend,
Chick-on is looking at you!

btw... it's pretty amazing to walk thru loads of the Rim Fire... and see it coming back...
We really had to deal with it on that trip... think we did pretty well.

Take Care!

edit: that was only the gang up there....

that's better...

Hi there JustKeepWalking,
Thank you. I had not been to the website for so long I had to look up my password! Had to pass on reading several thousand messages. As I just PM'd to chick-on, still wishing I could be out there.
Jim
