Advice on Ostrander
May 18, 2016 09:27AM
I've been scouring the maps the last few days trying to find a Memorial Day Weekend trip that won't involve too many water crossings or snow. In your opinion, would Ostrander to Hart to Royal Arch Lake be a route worth taking? I see some snow in the badger pass webcam and a lot of soupy ground. Even if the route is clear, would I be setting myself up for a mosquito ambush?

Of course it's a route worth taking...

But you mentioned you didn't want snow.... and Ostrander, Hart, Buena Vista, and Royal Arch... will have lots of snow still...

It's spring... there's water everywhere...

That high... v doubtful mosquitos yet. Have only seen them lower elevation so far...

Go to Washburn Point... the lookout and look south... you'll see Buena Vista Crest... that should give you
a good idea of conditions.

I'd go with simply... any snow at all at Badger... then expect plenty at Ostrander. It's early still.
Maybe go Mono Mdw TH around to BV? Though you gotta x stream right away near Mono Mdw TH...
After than nuttin... though I've heard ppl whine about the trail...

Have fun

Wow, a response from THE Chick-on. What an honor! I've only been at this for a couple of years, and those were severe drought years, so dealing with an abundance of snow and water is a new experience for me. Thanks for the advice!

Ewe funni.

Z wifie and I dooz Ostrander in mid-June ... and Hart ... and Edson... and they all a frozen over.
Last weekend we spied BV and Horse Ridge from Tioga Rd ... and definitely a whole lotta snow still.
So I'd expect snow. smiling smiley
For fun... here's one from that June 2011 trip (a big snow year)

and from this year... atop Z Horsie Ridge in February...

(That's Hart below... for fun I camped right on it)

the crossing that I was talking about is here:

May not seem like much... but have seen people west of it b/c they couldn't get across...
and personally I searched upstream for logs to cross (which took quite some time to find)

Anywho... have fun out der

Ask and yea shall receive (maybe)
Ask not and yea shall receive nut

Awesome pics!

If you believe that the crossing on the Mono Meadows trail could be treacherous, maybe I will wait a couple weeks. Thanks!

To expand on what Chick-on said; This last week-end the snow was about 100% coverage at 8000' with minor patches at 7500'.

Shhhh... Didn't want to upset the poor bird...

He was off by 1000' when we last passed through Crane Flat. 200' is nothing by comparison...
