Winter Hike to Merced Lake Area?
February 13, 2017 05:13PM
I've been up to LYV several times in Winter, but not past the Moraine Dome area. I was thinking of trying to ski or snowshoe back to the Merced Lake area, but I'm not sure if getting past the Bunnell cascade and then further would be a problem (specifically the area between the two foot bridges between Bunnel and Echo Valley). Has anyone been back here in the Winter who can offer some advice?

My apologies... but I can't find the exact thread where I went over the 3 possible difficult places.
First is right after Grizzly Falls after Moraine Dome ... it squeezes... and could be problematic.
Next is from Lost to the Twin Bridges. Everytime gone thru there it's been clean... but...
I only have a sample of 3-4 in winter-ish...
Hardest point is the Bunnell Switchers... um... yeah... I actually skipped those one year...
on account knew what it was like... there's a story there... but I'll spare you... for now...

Take a look at this:

So... be prepared to turn around at any point... or head uphill... or go high route (much safer imo)

Here's our trip to Echo Lake via Echo Valley:

(no, do not go up Mist... sigh)

Thanks, I'll take a look. If things get too hairy I will definitely turn around.

On a side note I was doing some research a few years ago for a trip I was doing up Matterhorn Canyon and found some good info on my trip. In a few of the photos I noticed this stuffed chicken and have no idea what it's all about, but realized today that you're probably the same guy. Thanks for the links with the photos, etc. Hopefully I'll run into to you sometime up in the park.

Yeah, I'm that nut(s).

Crazy about backpacking and The Sierra and Yosemite.

Have fun...

It's possible that you MAY be able to zip up to the high trail by the dubble bridges...

Here:

The squeeze spot above is only here:

We went high and dropped down by the dubble bridges... one year...
and well... let's just say ... um... that the wifie was not too terribly pleased with me...
It MAY be simple due to the recent Meadow Fire which toasted that hill...

Anyway... have fun and post pix or sumtin if you go...
I might go in April. It's been a staple for the last 5+ years... in one way or another.

The Bunnell must be really something...

Ridiculous amount of snow at higher elevations...

Can only be one place at once tho...

Soon...

So I still haven't been able to get up here yet due to other stuff going on. I do have a Mount Shasta climbing trip in a few weeks though. I still want to do this trip though.

If you get to Echo or Merced...leave a day for hiking up to (or near) Babcock Lake,if you can. It's entirely non technical in snow and the trail offers some stunning views. Sort of the capper to the trip, imo. Chick-on could tell you more.
