Is camping allowed at Gaylor Lakes ?
February 17, 2017 12:53PM
It looks like it would be according to the map (it appears to be "beyond the arrows" ). Regs say 4 miles from TM and one air mile from any road. Anybody ever camp there ?

It's not allowed.

Gaylor, Granite, Dog... not allowed.
You have to be beyond the ridge... or outside the park
(you can camp JUST outside here:

by the great sierra mine

You cannot camp in the basin of Parker Pass / Mono Pass ... either...

I'll find it in the regs somewhere...

um... ok, it says no camping at Great Sierra Mine either... um... um...

I think that it is actually allowed... but... well... um... oops if not...
I was outside the park when I slept there... um... maybe I'm wrong there...
(I wouldn't do it "in season" though... )
(it's the SHR "route"winking smiley ...

Was told, long ago, north/ far side Granite was OK...searched but cannot find any regs saying different.
Probably I'm wrong, as usual.

That's in Gaylor Creek watershed... so highly unlikely...

Camping is also not permitted in the:
Parker Pass Creek watershed
Dana Fork of the Tuolumne River watershed
Gaylor Creek watershed
Lukens Lake
Budd Creek watershed
The top of Half Dome
Within 100 feet of a trail, flowing stream, river or any body of water, unless designated, and as follows: Camping is permitted within 100 feet of a stream, trail or body of water provided that a well established campsite exists and terrain permits no other options. In no case will camping be permitted within 25 feet of a stream, trail or body of water.
Below the high water line at both Lake Eleanor and Hetch Hetchy

I was pretty sure Skelton wasn't allowed either... but... with above... not entirely sure now...
National Geo Map has all the way to the White Mtn to Ragged Peaks ridge as no camping...
I'd go with that...

Anywho... No to Gaylor Lakes

Not sure why Elizabeth isn't explicitly mentioned ...

There are a few camp-able spots over Parker Pass along the string of lakes between the pass and start of the Koip Pass climb.

Thanks everyone.
OK, the regs say no camping at Gaylor. (It's 1.1 trail miles from the road, so prob. less than one air mile). But Granite isn't specifically mentioned and my bet is it's more than one air mile from Tioga Road. So....

It says "Gaylor Creek Watershed".
That includes all Granite and Gaylor Lakes.

Totally unrelated, but I love Gaylor lakes so checked out the thread (glad you can't camp there actually), but recently learned that to get a designation of Napa Valley on your wine bottle, your vineyard needs to be in the Napa Valley watershed. So the watershed is actually the defining factor. And because of that, it has been carefully mapped and evaluated.

Living in Sonoma County, noticed recently as we were driving over St. Helena Road that there was clearly a sign saying you are entering the Napa Valley Watershed, and sure enough a vineyard, right on the other side.
