Big Oak Flat Road Trailhead
May 08, 2017 12:50PM
Hi,

I'm planning a 3 - 4 day hike in Yosemite in June.
Can anyone help me with information about the trailhead 'Old Big Oak Flat Road'? I'm thinking about hiking to Yosemite Falls from there.
Will it be possible to start from the trailhead or is the road closed?
Is there a bus to drop us off there as we have only one car available?

Alternatively I'm thinking about starting at 'Ten Lakes' and hike to Glen Aulin. Which one is the more challenging hike?

Help would be highly appreciated!
Thanks,
Sophie

Road is open...
(It's Big Oak Flat Road)
Trailhead is #8 here:

Doubtful Tioga opens by then so public transportation doubtful...
https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/publictransportation.htm
(look for Tioga Road/Tuolumne Meadows)

Ten Lakes to Glen Aulin is much harder... however in June
you will have to deal with many stream crossings and copious amounts of
snow and route finding...

Old BOF Road TH... you have to ford Tamarack and a couple others...
these may be very difficult...
You should get a sense by driving down towards the valley and perhaps
even Tunnel View to see Cascade Creek (bridged) and Tamarack (ford)
before attempting in spring runoff timeframe...
Beyond there... this year... Ribbon Meadow will be interesting...
and so on...

Have fun
be safe

Hey Sophie

The road is currently open to the OBOF trailhead and you should not have any trouble getting there.
The Valley shuttles do not go there. You might be able to take the Tuolumne Meadows shuttle and get dropped off there (assuming that the shuttle is running at the end of June). I say "if running" because the Tioga Road may not be open yet. In which case you will also not be able to get to the Ten Lakes trailhead (i.e. your plan B is DOA)

Your Plan A is what I did about a year ago (end of April). We had, um, interesting conditions as you will see from the trip report here.I would expect even more snow and more difficult water crossings in late June this year. Bring your Gore-Tex boots!

Thanks for the helpful info!

We will try to get the permit and then see what the conditions are.

How do you see the chances getting a ride to the trailhead? Are there a lot of cars going that direction from the valley?

Be prepared to turn around at Tamarack...

It may looks like this (minus the log)

Yes, Big Oak Flat Road gets a lot of traffic... so your chances are good...
but you prolly gonna be spending a lot of time setting it up...
(gotta park at Happy Isles TH parking) ... etc. etc...
