Things to See East of Fresno
July 31, 2017 12:43PM
Hi Everyone,
I just found out I will be spending a month and a half in Fresno for work. Work days will end around 3 or 4. I don't want to spend the rest of the day sitting in my hotel room in Fresno (no offense to those who live in Fresno smiling smiley ). I'm interested in short hikes or drives in the Sierra east of there, and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Not looking for anything crazy, but just a chance to get away from the heat and get into the fresh mountain air for a few hours.
Thanks!

Get a map of Kings Canyon NP and have a go at the Grant Grove area. There are many trails and things to see. It's a bit over an hour drive each way but you should be able to get an hour or two of hiking if you don't mind driving back after sunset.

Alternate idea: Fresno has a Costco.

I've frequently stopped at the Merced Costco to and from Yosemite to fill up my car with gas.

30 minutes to Table Mountain Casino. Air conditioned & free coin disposal machines.

in terms of bang-for-the-buck day hike, it's hard to beat Mitchell Peak in Sequoia. drive time-wise, probably the same as Cedar Grove. it's 6 miles round trip, with 2,000' gain and loss, so it's more like a moderately strenuous morning or afternoon, not an easy stroll in nature. maybe more than you have in mind.

Thanks for the info, great ideas. I'm not too keen on donating my hard earned money to the local casino (a 2-year job in Reno cured me of that). I'll definitely look towards King's Canyon area.
I have a 5-day trip in Yosemite planned over Labor Day, so some strenuous hikes will be good prep.

Twin Lakes might be a little long for after work, but Tokopah Falls is a great short hike.

A couple weeks ago I did a nice backpacking trip east of Fresno from Courtwright Reservior- Maxson Trailhead. Beautiful country in the John Muir Wilderness right up highway 168 directly out of Fresno.
. I highly recommend it.
