Tenaya Canyon - a few Qs
June 25, 2018 03:34PM
Hi everyone,

A friend and I are looking to tackle Tenaya Canyon in mid-August. I had a few questions which hopefully folk here can help with. I've used the search function already and read through a lot of threads about this with some very helpful pics - these are the few Qs I had left...

-A lot of trips through Tenaya seem to take place in September. Is mid-August likely to be dangerously early? From looking at a water gauge site earlier, it seems that river flow is down at the moment - is that likely to remain the case through August?

-I've read the various descriptions of how to get down the slabs (i.e. not going down too soon after Lone Boulder). I've seen a few people mention roping up - are there anchors set up here, or what technique are people using here (if both individuals want to be roped up when the time comes, someone isn't free soloing and taking all the risk themselves etc)?

-I've tried to locate the various rap points (in the gorge) on Google Earth. I've set out what I think are the first two raps here:

I was then trying to find the third rap (i.e. the next rap down into the gorge from the side ledge) but couldn't really see where on earth this is. Anyone able to help here?

-Finally, is someone able to indicate on a map whereabouts the poison oak areas are (in general)? Is the key to stay on the left/south side of the creek when in those final few miles?

Thanks!

Peter

Mid August this year probably ok. Last year... no way...

It's a friction climb down from the "Shrub Doggy". You should not need any pro.
Your call. There weren't any rap pts when I did it. Just a down climb. With a
dive into the shrub when the angle got too much.

There's trails on the north side. There's PO. I think you want to stay out
of the creek after awhile. It's easier in the woods. Look for game trails ...
know what PO looks like... and you should be ok...

Here's from my track... rap pts... etc...

Overview of Inner Gorge along with descent.

Descent:

You stay on the fin... keep more to the right...

First two raps:

First rap is easily found... and 2nd is in the canyon... so hard to miss.

Second two:

Pix set... lone boulder in to first rap... back out airplane gully

Complete run (solo) (yeah, I'm nuts)

2nd run

Rap pts:

Be safe. Maybe take backup rope. Don't do it solo. I didn't say to do it.
Once you do the first rap... you're committed. Make sure there is
not huge amount of water... I was once told some peeps were gonna do
it and just jump... uh right... Not buying it.

Anyway, have fun and good luck!

chick-on, you hero, this is super helpful.

It looks like you go out on the ledges a little ways before Rap 3 takes place. Is it kinda obvious when to get out onto the side ledge? I'm guessing it'll be obvious enough if we've missed it as we'll presumably come to a drop at some point before Rap 3 that doesn't look navigable and has no anchor.

I think I read somewhere else on the forum that the max angle of those slabs (assuming you take the right path) is about 35 degrees, that sound right to you? Hard to judge from the photos as angles can be deceptive.

Do you by any chance still have a .GPX or .KML file that you wouldn't mind sharing? Would be quite useful as backup just in case we start fretting over that descent in particular. Though I think we've got a pretty good sense of it now. I had no idea of Shrub Doggy before I came to this forum...

Finally, for a pair of first timers there who are obviously gonna faff around with photos a bit, does 12 hours sound about right? From your lunch spot I'm guessing its still a good few hours slog to Mirror Lake? You mentioned wanting to stay out of the creek after a while, is that primarily cos its just slower going in there?

Cheers for so much useful information!

I'll have to look at the timestamps to tell you how long it took.

imo... all the rap points were very easy to find.

I dunno about 35 degrees. I think that's about right... but I'd say at the very bottom.. of the Shrub Dog descent...
it's more than that... which is why you'll end up like the pix set there ... in the shrub gully a bit..

You can use this if you like:

click this and you can download it

Note we did cross the creek close to Mirror Lake loop trail. It's gonna be way slower going and much more difficult
if you stay in the trail west of Watkins. You'll see what I mean when you dooz it.

be safe

fyi... if you want to see the
"Turn around and don't even think of doing Tenaya Canyon" sign

it's here:
https://mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?ll=37.810035,-119.471141&z=15&t=t4&q=https://sites.google.com/site/chickontracks/gpx/TenayaCanyon14.gpx

again... it's anything but trivial. if you are taking too long to get to rap pt. #1 think about turning around and trying another day
once on the first rap... you're committed

take care

Thanks for all the follow-up information, chick-on - really appreciated! Will post a TR here once we've done this (if I don't come up with any more Qs before then...!)
