Quick question
January 25, 2019 12:18AM
Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I registered here, yet now we've got real of visiting Yosemite (btw, this will be our first time in Yosemite).
I know, there are campsites where we plan on staying (we plan staying at Sunrise Lakes).
I was wondering, whether it is allowed to use those truck-mount tents? I know, that not all campings allow using them, so wanted to ask you, folks, beforehand.

Thanks.

First, I must ask.... How do you plan on transporting this "truck-mount tent" to Sunrise Lakes?

No vehicles allowed anywhere near Sunrise Lakes. And, to camp there you'll need a wilderness permit.

Balzaccom,

Why would you say Troutwild was kidding?

Sunrise lakes is either a High Sierra Camp, or backpacking only. Either way, no vehicles. Camping in vehicles is only allowed in the designated campgrounds, so he could not even pull off the road at the Sunrise Lakes trailhead to spend the night. Jim2006 needs to spend some time learning about backpacking vs car camping in yosemite. Here is the link to the campground information page: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htm

OK--In that case it would have been more direct so that say Sunrise Lakes is not a car campground. It is only accessible by hiking trail. And the trailhead itself is not a campground.

If you'd like to camp in the high country in Yosemite and also drive to your camp site, check out this website:
https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htm

You have five choices along Tioga Rd, with Tuolumne the only one that takes reservations. Note the availability (or not) of tap water at others. While as far as campgrounds go, Tuolumne is not that great (roads are awful, it's crowded, the sites are packed in, many sites are on slopes, doesn't have showers), the location is very convenient for starting high country hikes. Plus you can walk to the snack shack and get yourself a soft-serve. :-)
