Camping on east side of Lyell Canyon?

I'm considering returning to Lyell Canyon this year. When I was there before, the best campsites by far seemed to be east across the river, if you could get to them. Didn't see anyone using them, though, except a trail crew. Has anyone forded the river to camp on the east side? Recommendations?
