Marmots and Mosquitos at Sunrise Lakes Area
July 01, 2022 11:29AM
Hello:

We will be camping at Sunrise Lakes around July 10th. The plan was to leave our tents with backpacks inside but bear canisters stowed properly outside while we dayhiked Clouds Rest. Although all food and smellables like toothpaste, sunscreen etc will be in the bear canister, we will have sweaty clothes/socks in the backpacks. How aggressive are the marmots in the Sunrise Lakes area. Has anybody had an experience with them chewing through a tent or a backpack to get to sweaty clothes? The marmots at the Mineral King area of SEKI are notorious. I also remember the marmots at Vogelsang, one big one, in particular, fearlessly approaching when I was backpacking through the area in 2020.

Also, what is the mosquito situation likely to be in about ten days?

Hoping that wildfires do not disrupt our plans this drought year.

Thanks in advance,
Jay

I haven't heard of any rodent/marmot issues at Sunrise. That's not a guarantee....just what I've heard.

Mosquitoes should begin to ease off this year in July ..but bring bug dope and head nets just in case. They are part of the experience.

Thanks balzacomm. We will hope the mosquitos have gone by the time we get there. We will also camp away from the water -- easier to bring water to camp.

As an aside, I enjoy reading your posts on backpacking in the Sierras.

Thanks Jay. I look forward to reading your trip report about this one---and how the mosquitoes were!

I am doing clouds rest and i was thinking to leave camp and come back with the idea of not carrying all the weight. Is it sure? where do you recommend to camp near clouds rest to leave the camp behind and have no issues? thank you is my first time at Yosemite

If you are coming in from the north side, off Tioga Pass Road, from the Cathedral Lakes or Sunrise Lakes trailhead, you could set up camp at Sunrise Lakes and do a day hike, ~8 miles round trip, to the top of Clouds Rest and back. If you come from the Valley, it seems there is a creek (either Sunrise Creek or Merced Creek, I am not sure) where you could set up camp before day hiking via The Pinnacles. I have not checked the elevation gain or strenous-ness of that route. Perhaps somebody else on the forum can comment and offer suggestions. You could google your starting point to Clouds Rest for suggestions. The online All Trails maps are also very useful.

Good luck
