Sierra snowfall means fun for the Valley
By Marek Warszawski / The Fresno Bee

Waterlogged Valley residents heading to the Sierra to frolic in freshly fallen snow should pack some common sense along with their ear muffs.

With a break in the weather expected Saturday and Sunday, rangers and winter resort operators are anticipating a busy weekend in the mountains north and east of Fresno.

Their message: Have fun, but stay safe.

That's true not just for skiers and snowboarders but also for those who just want to play in the snow. Even sledding can be risky, as shown by two injuries last weekend in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks that required medical evacuations, parks spokeswoman Adrienne Freeman said.

"We love to see people come up and play in the snow," Freeman said. "But we advise them to use common sense. If the hill you're sledding on is steep, you're going to go fast."

And just because it's not expected to snow this weekend doesn't mean it won't.

With that in mind, visitors should always carry chains -- they can be required at any time, even on four-wheel-drive vehicles -- and pack an emergency kit with winter essentials such as warm blankets, extra food and water and a windshield scraper.

"Even if roads are clear of snow, they can still be very, very icy," Freeman said. ....
