Public Comments Sought for OHV Grants

The Plumas National Forest is actively developing its draft Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) draft grant applications that will be submitted to the State of California by March 1, 2010. The public is invited to comment on any changes or improvements to the program and to assist with the development of the grant applications. The applications will be available for public review from March 2, 2010 through April 5, 2010. Final applications are due to the State of California on May 3, 2010. To review the grant applications, go to http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/ and click on the link to review the preliminary applications.

One grant application will be prepared for ground operations projects for winter and summer, and planning and restoration projects. The second application will be for winter and summer law enforcement. The 2009-2010 grants will provide for operation, maintenance, signing, and resource protection for trails and facilities associated with the Plumas National Forest recreation program.

The summer OHV program consists of: approximately 4,900 miles of roads available for summer OHV touring of which, 4X4 miles may be used as OHV routes including 109 miles of “true” 4X4 roads and single-track; developed OHV camps at Gold Lake, Poker Flat, Stag Point, American House & Cleghorn Bar; monitoring for OHV impacts to soils and wildlife habitat; and an active volunteer program through Adopt-A-Trail.

The winter snowmobile program consists of: three winter recreation areas (Bucks Lake, La Porte, and Lakes Basin) consisting of 184 miles of groomed snowmobile trails with an active volunteer grooming program; 868 miles of signed, ungroomed snowmobile riding opportunities; winter staging areas at Gold Lake, Bucks Summit, Big Creek and La Porte; warming huts at the La Porte staging area, Four-Trees, four trailside warming huts associated with the La Porte trail system; and monitoring for winter use impacts to wildlife habitat.
