Advice on Clouds Rest Hike - thanks in advance!
August 27, 2010 06:12PM
Hey Everyone,

Sorry if this topic has been beaten to death. Please tell me if this is a feasible plan:
1) Staying in Curry Village overnight,
2) Leave early next day and drive to Tenaya Lake trailhead
3) Hike Clouds Rest in ~7-9h (We're both in good shape and experienced hikers)
4) Be back to trailhead around 3-4 pm

Is that a do-able plan logistically?

Thanks!

Definitely.

Plan for approx. 75 min. to drive up to Tenaya.

Excellent. Thanks a lot for your reply. Do the shuttles run early, or should we definitely plan on driving?

You will have to drive. (Er... you said "drive" in your original post.)

There is no shuttle that runs between the valley and the high country.
There is a backpacker/hiker bus and also a YARTS bus that traverse that route, but they will not be compatible with your timeframe.

That's the Tour/Hiker's bus run by DNC. I took that in 2007 to start my backpacking trip at Tenaya Lake.

They claim it will end Sept 19 this year. When I took it, we arrived at Tenaya Lake at around 11 AM.

Just a note that might be of interest:
Bill-e-g started at Tenaya Lake this morning at 8AM, went up and over Clouds Rest, to both of the Quarter Domes, over to and up and down Half Dome, up and down Liberty Cap, and out to the trailhead parking near Happy Isle by 6:20PM. He did do some goofing off along the way.

It's a great plan.

Most people who go up Clouds end up preferring it to Half Dome.
... I'm in that regard... and so is the bird... :

You will love this hike. We did it a couple of weeks ago driving from Yosemite Lakes in the morning and going back in the afternoon. Don't forget to soak your feet in Tenaya Lake after the hike.

Thanks for your reply SkBunny. If you don't mind answering a few questions:

1) What time did you get to the trailhead at Tenaya Lakes?
2) Which trailhead was it
3) Did you start and finish at the same trailhead.

Thanks a lot!

If they soaked their feet in the lake, it was Sunrise trailhead, which is the usual starting point for a Clouds dayhike. It is 14-15 miles if done out and back. Great hike, too. I very much prefer it to the overtrampled and overused Happy Isles approach (which is 22 miles round trip to Clouds Rest).

Sunrise trailhead is where we started and finished. We started around 7:30. We were not fast by any means and spent quite some time at the top. Came back to where we started from around 2:30.
