Horace Greeley is best remembered as a highly influential newspaper editor of the mid-1800s who gave the famous advice, "Go west, young man, go west and grow up with the country." He is far less frequently remembered for declaring Yosemite Falls to be a "humbug" after a visit late in the dry season of 1859. Had he been able to glimpse the falls this year, he probably would have drawn a different conclusion.
