Red Peak Pass condition
August 20, 2011 01:31PM
Hey, I was thinking about heading to the park in the next couple of days to go backpacking around the Red Peak Pass area. Has anyone been that way recently and know if the trail over the pass is still buried in snow? I'm going solo with no GPS so would prefer a non-snow covered route..

Thanks in advance

Chris

Hi Chris,

I climbed Gray Peak a couple of Saturdays ago. Here's a shot from the near the summit towards Red Peak. I don't think you can see Red Peak Pass proper, but you can get a feel for the north-facing slopes in that area.

Here's a link to a map of the area: Closed Contour map

A few more pictures are available here: Gray Peak Pictures

Very cool.

I had started writing something ... but figured the person would never look and/or
had already left.

From view from Clark and Obelisk area... and from your photo of Lake 10425
(that area is gorgeous btw)...
the east side gonna still have significant snow... west side no issue
Should be similar to this:

If you can read a map and know what the pass looks like then I don't think the
snow is an issue. If going counter clockwise... then you just head towards Red Devil..
with map and noggin you'll find the trail lower...

Chick-on is looking at you!
