Could anyone comment about recent (last week or so) mosquito levels around Lyell Canyon, Vogelsang, Bernice Lake and Washburn Lake areas?

Trying to make a reasonable guess at what might be expected in the 9,000-11,000' elevations in the next two weeks.

To sum up what I see in recent posts, it looks like Tuolumne Meadows isn't bad once you get away from the river:

Brutal at 9,500-9,700' near Ten Lakes:

Lots around Townsley & Hanging Basket (10,600') lakes:

And is mosquito presence more directly related to elevation rather than proximity? (i.e. if they're bad at 9,400' near Ten Lakes then you could expect them to be bad at 9.700' near Obelisk Lake, even though they might be ok at 7,200' at Merced Lake, just 2 miles from Obelisk.) Thanks!

The mosquito presence is most directly related to the presence of nearby standing water where they breed and hatch. Lots of standing water = lots of mosquitos. Get away from the water = get away from most (but not all) of the mosquitos. Hope for breezy conditions to keep the mosquitos away from your skin.

Oh yes, for sure they need standing water.

Rephrased: assuming same water saturation, I'm guessing that between the factors of elevation and proximity, two sites at similar elevations (but 15 miles apart) are likely to have similar mosquito levels, but two sites close to each other (2 miles apart) at different elevations are less likely to have the same levels.

And yes, a breeze helps a lot!
