Red peak pass loop
September 05, 2011 02:42PM
Went on a 4 day 50 mile loop over red peak pass this weekend. It was a great way to see a good variety of what yosemite has to offer, but was more strenuous than I expected.

Lower ottoway lake was placid and full of fish. There were quite a few groups camped up there on thursday.

These are the upper ottoway lakes from near the top of red peak pass.

The east side of the pass still had a bit of snow, but was still passable by a couple of novices.

Iceberg in a tarn.

There were still many wildflowers out there to spice things up.

We only saw one other person between red peak pass and washburn lake.
The final climb back up to glacier point was a painful slog, but the views made it worthwhile.

Thanks for sharing the photos. It looked like it was a beautiful weekend to go backpacking.

(BTW, were there any mosquitos to speak of? It appears from other recent trip reports that the Yosemite backcountry mosquito population has taken a nosedive in recent days.)

It was a great weekend to be outdoors. As far as skeeters go, it varied with location. Ottoway lakes was pretty clear, triple peak fork river had lots of flies not too many bloodsuckers, lost valley below merced lake was pretty bad, but maybe our camp site choice was not the best (in a wooded area out of the breeze).

Nice pictures, thanks for posting. Definitely looks different than the snow-free time I had a couple years ago in August.
