The Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center, or ESAC, will continue to operate during the 2011-2012 winter season as a partnership between the Inyo National Forest and the non-profit Friends of the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center. This year the Center will employ one seasonal avalanche forecaster, Sue Burak, who began work on December 19. The Center will issue a minimum of three avalanche advisories per week, with additional advisories issued if needed and feasible.

Free public avalanche education and awareness seminars will be made available throughout the season. These seminars will be advertised on ESAC’s website: http://esavalanche.org/. There will also be two functional Beacon Parks, or beacon training facilities. One will be located at Gus’ Pasture at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and the other will be located at the west end of the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center plaza, behind the Mammoth Ranger Station. The Beacon Parks will be installed as soon as practicable after adequate snow depth exists.

The ESAC 2011-2012 Season Kick-Off event will be held on Saturday, January 7. There will be free daytime avalanche awareness clinics followed by the Center’s Annual Fundraiser at Eagle Lodge in Mammoth. The fundraiser will host renowned ski mountaineer Andrew McLean. More information will be available on ESAC's website as the date gets closer.
