The article mentioned a piece of Yosemite history that I was not aware of:
"Not so fun fact: Yosemite National Park used to stretch as far Devil’s Postpile, but it and and surrounding areas were removed in 1905 under pressure from mining interests."

Here's a map that show all the changes to Yosemite's boundaries over the years:



Here's a more detailed map showing the orignal park boundary versus the 1905 and 1906 boundary changes:



While with the 1905 boundary change, Yosemite National Park lost the Ritter Range, the San Joaquin River headwaters areas, it now included more of the Tuolumne River watershed and most importantly, Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
