Yosemite and Cal Fire fire crews have begun mechanical hazard fuel reduction thinning projects in the wildland urban interface (WUI) areas of Foresta and O'Shaughnessy at Hetch Hetchy. Crews are creating defensible firefighting space by cutting and piling accumulated small trees, brush and dead and down fuel. Work in Foresta is adjacent homes west of 1st and 2nd streets. Work at Hetchy will begin at the city of SF clubhouse and continue around SF and NPS infrastructure along the Hetchy road. Piles will be burned when surrounding vegetation is wet.

The last time they did that along 41 those piles hung around for years. I'd just run it through a chipper and spray it back into the forest. There it will decompose quicker than whole pieces and since it's on the ground, not upright with a bunch of air around it, the stuff won't burn so hot as to be a fire hazzard.
