Bears have emerged from their winter dens and have begun their search for food. They have been active in many areas of Yosemite, including Yosemite Valley and Hetch Hetchy. This time of year, bears can often be found meadows eating grasses. If you see a bear in an undeveloped area, please keep your distance (at least 50 yards), and let them forage naturally. A sub-adult bear has been very active along the base of El Capitan and other climbing areas. This bear has been searching for backpacks and haul bags containing food. Please make sure someone is on the ground in arm’s reach of your food while climbing, or bring food up on the climb with you. NEVER leave food unattended at the base of a climb. If you are camping in Yosemite, please treat your bear locker as you would your refrigerator at home: open it to get what you need, then close and latch it immediately. Stay close to any food that is out. Multiple bears have been seen in and around all campgrounds in Yosemite Valley this week. If you see a bear during your visit please report it to the Save-A-Bear Hotline at 209-372-0322.
