Mono County authorities searched throughout the weekend for a missing Pennsylvania hiker who was last heard from July 16 in the Mammoth Lakes area, just outside the Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite National Park. Matthew Greene, 39, of Bethlehem, Penn., arrived in Mammoth Lakes on or about June 27 and last spoke with his parents weeks later while camping at Shady Rest Campground and waiting for his car to be repaired, according to a Mammoth Lakes Police Department statement.

Such a sad story. I'm hoping for the best, but expect the worst.

Hopefully Greene's alive and near a water source. I know of a story of someone from England who was badly injured near Clouds Rest. The Englishman was found three weeks later and ultimately survived.

avatar Mono County Matthew Greene Search
August 13, 2013 10:44AM
Mono County is engaged in a search for a hiker named Matthew Greene who has been missing since July 17th, last seen in the Mammoth Lakes area. He is believed to have left from Mammoth, possibly via public transportation to a trailhead for a day hike possibly involving technical terrain. His destination is not known, however search efforts have been conducted by Mono County primarily in the Ritter/Banner area.

Yosemite Search and Rescue has been in frequent contact with Mono County SAR officials, and they do not believe Greene is in the park. However, they have requested we post missing person flyers in the Tuolumne Meadows area to alert hikers who may be traveling from there to the Mono County area or hiking from Tuolumne through the boundary into other more likely search areas in Mono County. Those flyers have been distributed.

The family of Matthew Greene has been organizing their own friends and family members to search for the subject in Mono County and through social media. Much of the media mentions Yosemite, but to date, nothing has indicated Greene is in the park. YOSAR will continue to work with Mono County and assist as requested
