Michigan bear encounter

Bears are a recurring topic here. This story was on the news recently about a young girl having a scary encounter with a black bear in the Michigan woods. It's worth posting for reference to human and bear behavior and not to instill unrealistic fear:

Very close to where I grew up and my parent's house. My mom always said I wanted to live with the bears.

When I heard this story the first thing that came in my mind was: What adult would let a 12 year old, who evidently has no knowledge of what you are supposed to do when approached by a bear, run by herself at night in a rural, wooded area? She was lucky it was not a mountain lion.
