As a former pilot I can only imagine the fear and respect these fire fighting pilots have to have for this kind of flying. Flying low in mountainous locations is always dangerous due to unseen normal updrafts and downdrafts caused by wind passing over the area. Adding the severe updrafts caused by fire to this mix makes for a sometimes violent and unpredictable ride in frequent poor visibility due to smoke. From the ground it may not look like they are that close to the ground. From the air it's a very different view. They fly in situations low to the ground most normal pilots avoid like the plague, not only because it's dangerous but also illegal, depending on altitude above the ground. It's sad to lose such a dedicated pilot.

Condolences.

Can't help but think about another firefighter whose life was taken, approx 10 years ago: Eva Marie Schicke. A portion of HWY 120 going into YNP is named after her. It's really unfair that people who do good in this world have their lives taken so soon.

Very sad and tragic indeed. He gave his life trying to protect our land and property. May he rest in peace.

Below is a San Francisco Chronicle reporter's photo of the official transfer of his body from NPS to CalFire that occurred this morning:

Fire crew stayed with him all night. I'm glad he's getting the honor he deserves.
