Ponderosa pine trees continue dying in the lower mixed conifer forests of Yosemite and surrounding communities at a rate not seen since 1978 (see the cover photo at: http://caforestpestcouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/Insect-and-Disease-Training-Manual.pdf). Elevated pine mortality is a direct result of extended water deficit and is expected to continue into 2015 whether this winter is wet or dry. The March 27 Daily Report introduced forest risk.
This winter, staff and visitors will be seeing more NPS, DNC, PG&E and other crews working to remove dead trees from hazard target areas such as lodging, campgrounds, roadways, and utility corridors. Please observe warning devices and guards around tree work areas.
