"Restoration of legacy impacts to ecosystem function in Tuolumne Meadows"
by Dr. David Cooper, Colorado State University, and Evan Wolf, University of California, Davis

Historic sheep grazing and modern native herbivory have significantly altered the plant community of Tuolumne Meadows, with important implications for ecosystem stability. Soil carbon, accumulated over hundreds of years, is decomposing faster than it is being formed. Protecting meadow plots from herbivory and transplanting native sedges that used to dominate this plant community can restore the ecosystem back towards soil carbon accumulation. Because soil carbon acts as a sponge to hold soil moisture, which in turn supports native sedges, it is critical to restore carbon storage in the meadow before the water-holding capacity that the native plant community requires is lost.

The Forum will take place Tuesday, September 15, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in the Yosemite Valley Auditorium.
