"Prospects for persistence of Douglas-fir through climate change at a dry range limit" by Derek Young, University of California, Davis

Douglas-fir trees in the Yosemite region experience among the driest conditions that exist throughout the entire range of the species, raising concerns about the potential for Douglas-fir to persist in a changing climate. To investigate how climate change may affect tree populations at this southern range limit, we evaluated the sensitivity of annual tree growth to annual weather variation using nearly 800 tree cores collected from Douglas-fir and its principal competitors throughout the northern and central Sierra Nevada. Our results suggest that Douglas-firs in the Yosemite region are among the most sensitive to moisture limitation. However, some of the southernmost populations may be uniquely tolerant of dry conditions, potentially due to local adaptation and/or the existence of microclimates that moderate drought effects.

The Forum will take place Tuesday, November 10, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in the Yosemite Valley Auditorium.
