SEQUOIA AND KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARKS, Calif. September 30, 2017 – Missing hiker Edward “Hall” Newbegin has been located in Sequoia National Park. The parks’ helicopter spotted Mr. Newbegin hiking towards Mineral King on the Franklin Lakes Trail, approximately 2.5 miles east of the trailhead. Park rangers made contact with Mr. Newbegin, confirmed that he was uninjured, and provided an escort out of the wilderness to reunite with his family.

Mr. Newbegin’s party departed from the Sawtooth Trailhead in Mineral King on Monday, September 25. Mr. Newbegin was reported missing after separating from his party on Wednesday, September 27, and failing to arrive at an expected rendezvous point.

“We’re very glad to be able to report that the missing hiker was found alive and uninjured,” says Incident Commander David Fox. “There are extra hazards in the mountains at this time of year. The weather can change quickly and it gets very cold. We ask that our hikers take extra precautions and check extended forecasts before they leave for the wilderness.”

A common factor in many search-and-rescue operations is individuals hiking alone, or separating from their party. Hikers are strongly advised to stay together, stick to their planned itinerary, and let someone know when they return from their trip.

More like about 5 miles...
But who is counting...

Stick N Fedders, myself, and z wifie were on our way to Fraklin Pass... on the 30th.
They had put up a flyer at the Sawtooth Pass trailhead which I'd looked at after
coming down from Monarch in the morning...
Anyway, I knew what he looked like (note to SEKI... um... maybe put a flyer on all
the major trailheads) (if I hadn't seen the flyer at Sawtooth... I wouldn't have
recognized him and we wouldn't have been so adamant waving to the helicopter)
Anywho... here's a picture.
(I took one of the guy... he was a bit tattered but in great spirits... but I'm not
sharing that)

And..

Be safe out there. I don't want to see this helicopter up close for the 3rd time this year.
