...SIGNIFICANT STORM WITH GUSTY WINDS AND HEAVY RAINS FRIDAY AND
SATURDAY...

A very warm, wet storm will bring gusty winds and significant
rains to the Sierra and western Nevada beginning on Friday and
continuing through much of the day Saturday. The main concern
will be the potential for flooding along creeks, streams, and
rivers.

WHAT CAN YOU DO NOW? Prepare for heavy rainfall by clearing
drainages, ditches, and gutters of debris and snow the next few
days. This will help to mitigate some of the flooding and runoff
potential. Prepare for strong winds by securing outdoor furniture,
temporary construction structures, and canopies.

RAINS - Areas of moderate to heavy rain will develop Friday night
and continue into Saturday. Snow levels will be between 9000 and
10500 feet into Saturday morning, keeping the bulk of the
precipitation in the form of rain. Rainfall totals between 2 to 4
inches are expected along the Sierra crest, with 1.5 to 2.5 inches
in the Tahoe Basin, and 1 to 1.5 inches in the Sierra foothills.
Although less than an inch is expected in western Nevada valleys,
plan on impacts such as rises on small creeks and streams as well
as ponding in low lying areas and street intersections. Areas
that experienced enhanced runoff or flooding during the last storm
a couple of weeks ago should plan on similar or greater impacts
due to the heavy rain and the expected contribution of the melting
snow pack.

RIVERS - Much increased flows expected Friday evening into Sunday
for the Carson, Susan, and the Truckee Rivers, with a longer
period of increased flow for the Pit and Middle Fork of the
Feather Rivers. For more details on mainstem river forecasts check
www.cnrfc.noaa.gov or read the hydrology section of the area
forecast discussion.

WINDS - Significant impacts are likely for high profile vehicles,
boaters, and aviation due to strong winds and turbulence on
Saturday. Widespread wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph are possible, with
stronger gusts in wind prone locations. Exposed Sierra ridge wind
gusts will likely exceed 90 mph.

SNOW - A few inches of wet snow is possible for the main Sierra
and northeast California passes late Saturday afternoon and
Saturday night as snow levels fall below 7000 feet. Chain
restrictions may occur for Highways 36 and 44 in northeast
California, and Interstate 80 and Highway 50 in the Tahoe area.

...FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY EVENING THROUGH
SUNDAY MORNING...

The Flood Watch continues for

* A portion of central California, including the following
areas, Mariposa, Madera, and Fresno County Foothills and
Sierra Nevada from Yosemite to Kings Canyon.

* From Friday evening through Sunday morning.

* Heavy rainfall in addition to snow melt will create excess
runoff and bring a threat of localized flash flooding, mud
slides, rock slides and debris flows, particularly in the
vicinity of the Detwiler fire burn scar. In addition, rainfall
runoff will allow for sharp rises in the Merced, San Joaquin
and possibly Kings River Saturday morning and continue through
out the day. The rise in the rivers could produce localized
flooding near their banks, especially in the Yosemite Valley.

* Some roads may become impassable or become washed out.
Residents should be alert for rising waters on area streams
with the possibility of flooding.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
