...Colder storm to impact travel this evening through Saturday
morning...
A colder spring storm is moving into the Sierra and northeastern
California this afternoon, with the peak intensity expected this
evening through Saturday morning. Several inches of snow are
possible tonight into Saturday morning in the Sierra. By early
Saturday morning, we could see a couple inches of snow in western
Nevada foothill locations, including Virginia City and the
Highlands. Additional showers will continue throughout the day on
Saturday, but warmer roads will limit chances for snow
accumulation.
Snow levels will fall to around 4500 feet in northeast California,
5000 feet in the Tahoe Basin and along the I-80 corridor, and
5500 feet farther south into Mono and Mineral Counties. Rain is
likely below these elevations, though amounts will be limited due
to the speed of the system.
Anyone with travel plans over the Sierra this evening through
Saturday morning should be prepared for longer drive times along
with likely chain controls. Driving conditions will improve during
the day Saturday, with travel expected to be good through Sunday.
Additional wet and windy weather is looking likely starting
Monday, possibly lasting through the middle or end of next week.

...Wet and Windy Week Ahead...
A series of storms will move through northern California and
Nevada Monday through Thursday bringing periods of rain and snow
along with gusty winds. Today will be the best day to travel
and/or prepare for the active week ahead.
Winds will begin to increase across Sierra ridgelines late tonight,
increasing in valleys Monday afternoon. Gusts of 30 to 45 mph are
likely, with locally stronger winds in wind prone locations along
US-395/I-580. Winds will remain gusty on Tuesday and Wednesday as
well. The winds may bring travel difficulties for high profile
vehicles along with turbulence for aviation.
Several inches of snow accumulation is possible on Sierra roads
Monday afternoon and again Monday night into Tuesday morning.
While additional rain and snow is likely during the day Monday and
Tuesday, roads will be warm enough to negate snow accumulation.
Spillover into western Nevada appears to be more limited, but
periods of rain and higher elevation snow are possible.
The greater concern is the stronger storm for Tuesday night into
Wednesday night with widespread travel impacts likely in the
Sierra and northeast California due to snow. This colder storm is
likely to have higher snowfall rates, which will increase the
chances for snow accumulation on roadways in the Sierra during
the day. Snow levels look to be between 5000-6000 feet, though
could drop further in heavier bursts of snow.
This storm will mainly bring periods of moderate rain to lower
valley locations. There is an increased concern for rises on
creeks, streams, and terminal lakes, along with spot flooding in
flood prone locations due to ponding of water.
Be sure to clear drains and secure any loose outdoor items today
before the weather deteriorates for the remainder of the week.
