SONORA, Calif. – Stanislaus National Forest announced that contractors with heavy construction equipment will be on Forest Road 4N12, Herring Creek Road, as they undertake meadow restoration work.
The contractor will begin staging construction equipment in late July, which may include excavators, backhoes, loaders, water trucks, and dump trucks. Work is expected to begin in early August and be complete by mid-October. While most work will occur between Monday and Friday, some work may happen on weekends as well, according to Tracy Weddle, Stanislaus National Forest hydrologist and project manager. “Construction traffic primarily will be between Pinecrest Peak Road and Bloomer Lake meadow. They will be loading and hauling rock and fill from a local source in that area, so visitors should see only minor increased construction traffic outside of that area,” Weddle said.
Five meadows off Herring Creek Road are being restored to improve and protect habitat for the threatened Yosemite Toad. The meadow restoration work is possible thanks to grants from the California Wildlife Conservation Board and the California Department of Water Resources, in partnership with the Tuolumne County Resource Conservation District.
