The Merced Grove is open to skiing/snowshoeing/hiking through the Christmas holiday. Short, intermittent, closures will likely occur through the rest of the winter and possibly into early spring for additional work and tree removal. In 2020 and 2021, thousands of giant sequoias died due to high severity fire burning through fuel loaded forests. Thanks to a generous donation from the Yosemite Conservancy, 15.5 acres of the Merced grove of giant sequoia were able to be cleared of hazardous fuels, in an effort to prevent destructive fire. The work will be continuing once weather permits.
