Rattlesnakes have been active in Yosemite Valley. Yosemite is home to only one venomous snake, the Northern Pacific rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus oreganus). Rattlesnakes are an important part of the park's ecosystem and they help control rodent and small mammal populations. Among other contributions, research suggests that rattlesnakes also assist in seed dispersal in some North American ecosystems. Residents of Yosemite National Park are reminded that rattlesnakes are a protected species.
