...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 10 PM THIS EVENING TO 4 AM
PST SUNDAY ABOVE 7000 FEET...

* WHAT...Heavy snow expected above 7,000 feet. Total snow
accumulations of 1 to 2 feet above 7,000 feet. Total snow
accumulations of 3 to 4 feet possible above 8,000 feet.
Isolated accumulations of 5 feet possible above 9000 feet. Winds
could gust as high as 50 mph.

* WHERE...Sierra Nevada from Yosemite National Park to Tulare
County.

* WHEN...From 10 PM this evening to 4 AM PST Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The
hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening
commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Expect a rise in snow levels to above 8,000
feet at times during Friday into Saturday morning.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in
your vehicle in case of an emergency.

The Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center in Mammoth Lakes has issued a
BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WATCH for the following areas: NWS Las Vegas
NV - CA-519 (Eastern Sierra in Inyo County) NWS Reno NV - CA-073
(Eastern Sierra in Mono County)

* WHAT...The avalanche danger is expected to rise to HIGH with in
the next 24-48 hrs. Dangerous avalanche conditions are expected to
continue into tomorrow.

* WHERE...The eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range
between Virginia Lakes to the north to Bishop Creek to the south.

* WHEN...In effect from Thu 06:00 PST to Sat 07:00 PST.

* IMPACTS...A series of large atmospheric river events will bring
periods of heavy snowfall, damaging winds and rain on snow into
the mid elevations stressing an already weak snowpack and creating
dangerous avalanche conditions at all elevations.

* PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Very dangerous avalanche
conditions are expected to develop as the first system arrives on
Friday 12/30/2022 . Travel in avalanche terrain is not
recommended. Avalanches may run long distances and can run into
mature forests, valley floors, or flat terrain.

Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 AM PST SUNDAY
ABOVE 7000 FEET...

* WHAT...Heavy snow expected above 7000 feet. Storm total snow
accumulations above 7000 feet of 6 to 18 inches possible,
except 1 to 3 feet between 8000-9000 feet. Areas above 9000
feet in elevation may see 4 to 6 feet. Winds gusting to 50
mph, except 100 mph or more along ridgetops.

* WHERE...Mono County.

* WHEN...Until 4 AM PST Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The
hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening
commute. Strong winds could cause tree damage and lead to
power outages.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snow levels will be around 9000 feet
through early Saturday morning, falling to near 7500 feet
midday Saturday, and below 6000 feet Saturday night. Snow totals
of 1 to 5 inches below 6500 feet will be possible (including
the cities of Bridgeport and Lee Vining) Saturday night into
early Sunday as snow levels drop.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Avoid travel if possible, you could be stuck in your vehicle for
many hours. If you must travel, prepare for long delays and carry
an emergency kit with extra food, water, clothing and tire
chains. Once the storm arrives, travel may be difficult or
impossible for an extended period of time. If you stay home, have
a backup plan in case of power outages.

...FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE SATURDAY NIGHT...

* WHAT...River and urban flooding caused by excessive rainfall is
possible.

* WHERE...Portions of California and Nevada, including the following
areas, in California, Greater Lake Tahoe Area, Lassen-Eastern
Plumas-Eastern Sierra Counties, Mono County and Surprise Valley
California. In Nevada, Greater Lake Tahoe Area, Greater
Reno-Carson City-Minden Area and Northern Washoe County.

* WHEN...Through late Saturday night.

* IMPACTS...Flows are increasing on rivers, creeks, and streams.
Excessive runoff may result in flooding of mainstem rivers,
creeks, streams, urban areas, low water crossings, and locations
with poor drainage.

* Mainstem river flooding is most likely to occur on the East Fork
of the Carson River, and the Susan and Pit Rivers in Lassen
County. Creeks and streams draining large portions of their
watershed under approximately 7,000 feet will also be prone to
flooding. Out-of-bank flows could result in road closures, causing
travel impacts.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- High snow levels along with prolonged heavy rainfall on
recently saturated ground and snow pack. Storm total liquid
accumulations of 4 to 7 inches along the Sierra crest, 3 to 5
inches in the Tahoe Basin, and 1.5 to 3.5 inches elsewhere in
the Flood Watch, including the Reno/Carson/Minden area.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood
Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared
to take action should flooding develop. Be especially cautious at
night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
