For those interested I have posted select photos taken of my July trip at http://yosemitephotos.net/main.php/v/tomdisco/Yosemite++2009/

For bill-e-g:
Dale, take a look at the following zoom photo taken from below the wooden bridge on the Glen Aulin Trail. From right to left is Grey Butte, tip of Virginia Peak, and Stanton Peak. Down in the "V" to to the left of Stanton is one or possible two distant peaks. Is that Whorl Mt., Matterhorn Peak or something else?

Actually, the left-most one is an unnamed peak just south of Whorl Mountain within the same range. The middle is Matterhorn Peak.
And the right-most one is the real Whorl Mountain.

Check out this annotated photo and it should be clear.

For another view just click forward to the next photo.

The stuff on the left is 2 bumps of Whorl Range. To the left of those bumps you can see Finger Peaks doing it's thing.
(peaking out from above the tree line that runs from Upper Left to bottom Right)

Hope this makes sense.

bill-e-g,

Yes, your corrections make sense. I was using the Nat Geo Trails Illustrated map to figure this out originally but the Glen Aulin Trail is on the front of the map while all these peaks are on the opposite side of the map. My perceived direction of view was off by several degrees. Got to do some editing. Thanks for straightening me out.

Jim,
Thanks for the great photos! I am pretty sure that the waterfall you show in this picture:
http://yosemitephotos.net/main.php/v/tomdisco/Yosemite++2009/Yosemite+2009+135.jpg.html
is actually visible from Tioga Road. I remember seeing a waterfall after leaving Tenaya Lake and before arriving at Tuolumne Meadows, and it seemed like it was coming from Cathedral Peak, but I only got one glimpse of it. I think that might be it, but I'm not sure.

Bob,

Look at photo # 35, which is a zoom photo of these falls taken from Tioga Road.

Jim,
That's it! Thanks! I wonder if you can just hike up to those falls from somewhere on Tioga Road. Would make for a fun and easy hike.

too bad I hadn't learned how to use that useless camera at this point, but the skeeters were attacking me. Okay, so Cougar, am I close enough to Sunrise now, hmmmm?

Bob,

While I was at the top there were two ladies in their 50's who were planning to hike "down" to Tioga Road.

I seem to recall that this question was answered in the affirmative when you raised it in a previous thread about 1-2 months ago.
[ Profiling it on TOPO! shows its "base" to be ~1.6 mile from the picnic area parking lot at the E end of Tenaya with an elevation gain of 0.8k, all of it in the last 1.0 mile. To reach the top is another 0.4k in ~0.2 mile.]

Jim,

You apparently did not recognize the famed "Statue of Marmot at Yosemite" shown in one of your photos:
http://yosemitephotos.net/main.php/v/tomdisco/Yosemite++2009/Yosemite+2009+052.jpg.html

Needless to say, you will never find a similar one honoring a chicken.
[Pseudo-historical note: this statue was cheated out of inclusion in the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by unabashed ballot-stuffing by those favoring the "Statue of Zeus at Olympia."]

P.S. Since you didn't upload any photos of the "Beautiful Valley" to your online collection, am I to assume that you didn't actually go over the small granite hill (between the two bridges) into Glen Aulin itself? The High Sierra Camp isn't really in Glen Aulin.
[That route is on my list of "bunny hikes" that I like to use to introduce newcomers to backpacking. I've lost count of the times that I've encountered people on the trail who told me that they were at Glen Aulin, meaning the HSC, but had absolutely no idea that the entrance to the real Gleann Alainn (in proper Gaelic) was 50 steps away.]

"Statue of Marmot" is new to me; never seen a picture or heard it mentioned before. Looks like another worthy photo edit.

No, I did not venture into the real Glean Aulin valley since the HSC represents an 11.6 mile round trip for day hiking.

Didn't see any chicken rock formations,-----very disappointing! crying

I had a v. nice time the end of June/early July. But, lots of skeeters at Sunrise!

blooty,

Don't you mean looking down Lewis Creek toward Merced Lake (instead of Sunrise) on the first photo?

Just for the record there is no "Statue of Marmot".
That is just some ruse by the Fracturnal Order of Marmots and their ploy to get a Casino within
the confines of the Park near Dana. Chickon Boo pecked that baby to bits earlier this year.
Chick-on has a plan to drop a duece on "Marmot" Dome and rename it Chick-on Dome in Google Earth.

Sorry Dale, but there is now a "Statue of Marmot". Len Szalkowski and I took a vote on it and it was a unanamous 2--0. You got to live with it.

You took a Pole on it?

I guess the Marmot in question chose to Fright instead of Flee. Usually they bail when they see the Chickon Boo.
