LASSEN VOLCANIC NATIONAL PARK - At about 9,000 feet, the persistently steep trail up Brokeoff Mountain levels off at the edge of an abyss. To the northeast, framed between jagged cliffs, sits hulking Lassen Peak, a dozing volcano more than 1,000 feet higher, still mostly bare of trees and cloaked in gray dust from its last big eruption, 94 years ago.....

I might overstate this, but after smelling the odor near the entrance and going to Bumpass Hell, I hiked to the top of Lassen Peak and looked out and was pretty sure I've just seen the prettiest thing I've ever seen. Volcanoes fascinate me to no end. No, the scenery is not quite Yosemite or Road's End, but just the fact that it's so close to where I live (about 3 hrs drive) and the scenery is so incredible it's just someplace where I'd like to be a lot. I remember lots of T-shirts and sweatshirts up there that say "Chico State"
