Why did it take so long for the researchers to release the research? If I had to count only up to 908 and tell someone two years later that I was able to count to 908, well, I soaked someone of their money for two years.

The research was published in a peer-reviewed, legitimate scientific publication:

In addition, I wouldn't be surprised if the funding agency (in this case, the U.S.Department of Agriculture) first required an internal peer-review before the article could be submitted to the JoM editor for consideration. Oftentimes it will take many (up to 6 is not unusual) months for journal reviewers to respond with their comments and suggestions for changes. If the changes are extensive, the editor may send the article back to the reviewers for re-evaluation. Once the article is accepted for publication, it goes into a queue for space in the journal (usually based on the initial date of submission to the journal). Before final publication, a proof copy is sent to the first author for final review/corrections.

It is hardly unusual for this entire process to take 1-2 years. (This is not your Mr. Write-Something-for-a-Newspaper process or a Limbaugh Rant.)
