Not far from your Donner Summit Bridge are some very interesting petroglyphs:
CA-NEV 5 site just off the old Highway 40 (Now Donner Pass Road).

The scenery alone is reason to take your child to Donner Pass. While you're there, enjoy the rich history of the area, check out the rock climbers practicing on Bastille Slab and School Rock, bring a picnic and take a short hike on a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail. >
