Saw the damage from one that jumped over my house once.

Yes, about 15 years ago, I saw a tornado hit Mt. Vaca (Vacaville -- between Sacramento and the bay area; the peak is about 3,500ft) when the tornado was forming, it looked like a big black, crooked finger reaching down from the the cloud, so that it was a very narrow funnel. WHen the tornado touched down on the mountain top, it looked like an explosion had occurred.

My brother saw one a few years ago in Boulevard, CA (eastern San Diego mountains). They have dust devils frequently there in the summer but this was a full-fledged tornado, not long lived, threw junk hundreds of feet in the air.

Some of those dust devils are HUGE. WHile driving through the desert, one crossed the road and it really shook up the truck. I watched it move across the open desert and it sucked up dirt and debris hundreds of feet; however, the whole process was much more gradual than the explosive force of the tornado.
