Tuolumne Meadows unlikely to open until mid-July maybe?
March 02, 2010 08:01PM
Is it safe to say this year's opening date(s) for Tioga Road; Tuolumne Meadow activities; (the store); the campground; etc., etc., ,,, will not get going until about mid July? ... given the steady and at times heavy precip' coming down everywhere in Northern California?

Last year, I was able to head way down Lyell Canyon the last week of June; wasn't even that muddy, though up towards Donohue Pass was pretty snowed over. But winter/spring '09 was a pretty conservative weather season ...

I'm wondering about this year ... more rain on the way still here in the Bay Area.

No, it's not safe to say. It's hard to predict how early the storms will stop and how fast the snow will melt.

I remember 2006 had Tioga Road opening around mid-June with the TM store just being set up as I entered in late June. The snowpack this year seems pretty similar to 2006. I know it's unpredictable, but I'd think it would be somewhere around the same time.

So are you talking about TM services, when TM lodge opens, or just when Tioga Road opens?

Well, I was mostly wondering about trailheads.

Okay then ... I think I'll hold off on placing any big bets, like wagering the entire house, on a specific opening date.

Hoping to get up there sooooooonnnnnnn ,!

The latest it has EVER been open is July 1.

So I'll take bets you can get to the TH you want by mid-July.

Not much of a road in 1933. What about 1977?

Looks like we have a mild El Nino with waves of snow. I've noticed the snow here in Reno (more predicted tonight) are very, very light and melt quickly. I wouldn't plan on Tioga opening anywhere near June 1 the way things are going. Come back in 3 months to see if I'm right...I'd say later June perhaps into July. Just in time for some repaving LOL

The road can have been open for weeks and still nothing is open up there.

The store, campgrounds, High camps, and everything else take quite some time to open at the start of the season, and pack up at the close of season.

A few years ago the High camps were closed all summer, they couldn't get them open early enough to make it worth while. It made it interesting camping at Glen Aulin and seeing all the tent cabins packed up with that part of the camp deserted.

That's what I'm hoping for this year. If those camps are closed I can go packing back there with my llamas. If those camps are open the high country loop is closed to llamas.

Anvanho, you obviously are not basing your assumption that Northern California is receiving heavy precipitation this year on real precipitation statistics. Maybe you're a recent arrival to the state and haven't experienced years like 1998? Because in fact much of Northern California is either a bit below average or only modestly above average. Even in the SF Bay Area, much of San Mateo County is below average. All of the Tahoe ski areas are a bit below average. No high banks of snow beside highways this year. I just checked the current percentage of normal precipitation map for the state as of yesterday and the Tioga Pass and Tuolumne Meadows area shows in the 110% to 130% of average zone. Our big years have far more truly huge storms. Haven't had a single pineapple express event this year. A couple government sites you ought to become familiar with are for CDEC and NOAA.
