From Erwin Gudde's book “California Place Names:”
Hazel, i.e. the native hazel bush or hazelnut (Corylus cornuta), occurs in the name of only a few geographical features, the oldest of which is probably Hazel Green Creek just west of Yosemite NP, named by the Mariposa Batallion in 1851 (Bunnell, p.316).

See also Hazel Green in Farquhar's “Place Names of the High Sierra:”

Wow! The caption on the image of Half Dome also gives "Tissiaac" as its' alternate name. That IS going back.
