Government for the people by the people mostly seems broken nowadays...
(my opinion) The impulsive (and a little hedonistic) popular idealistic concerns of the 60's seemed to morph into a hyper-reliogiosity and eventually a sort of entrenched conservatism that we see today. In the USA, I think there is not an underlying sense that "the people" is "a pluralistic society" or that government should create social institutions that benefit broad society, not just stimulate and reward business interests. Most of governmental action in the last 20 years has been to deregulate business, commercialize governmental action, and eschew social programs like affordable health insurance, public transportation, primary/secondary education improvement, environmental protections, and higher education cost containment. It seems like European societies have a better sense of the people as a collective society and those governments tend to focus on quality of life rather than the quantity of income.
The cure for a fallacious argument is a better argument, not the suppression of ideas.
