Mid May - Glacier Point Road
April 21, 2010 04:53PM
Hey everybody,

I have a reservation for the wawona campground site for May 12-14 and was hoping to get some help on a couple of questions.

With this past storm and next week storm about to hit, I was wondering if Glacier Point Road has a CHANCE of being open around May 13-14.

I was really hoping to hike up to Taft Point and Glacier Point, but if the road is closed that wont be possible.

If the road is closed, is there any way to hike to the trailhead?

If not, what other peaks have gorgeous and spectacular views that would be open to hike/drive up to the trailhead?

Thanks in advance.

No chance. The road will be closed for construction except on weekends.

Is there any other way to get to the trailhead by hiking?

If not, what other scenic hikes can be available during mid-may?

Wawona Tunnel or Panorama Tail from the Valley can get you to Taft/ GP.
You just have to work for it...

All hikes in Yosemite are scenic IMO.

Thanks for the help. How fast does the snow melt after storms?

I don't think u want the equation.

This year... Mid May... you're probably best off going up the Panorama Trail.
The Pohono from Wawona Tunnel probably gonna have lots o snow on it still.
There's plenty o tree cover until Staniford Pt. and not a lot of southern exposure.

Ah I see.

I'm assuming Half Dome will be covered in snow along with the dome itself. I was hoping to go up with the cables down. Had my harness and equipment ready to go, but dont want to risk it with slippery granite.

Half Dome will almost certainly be free of snow then. However, the subdome holds snow longer and you will
indooobadibly have to hike up the subdome full o snow then.
To go up the cables when they are lying down is your call.
Sometimes Darwin wins. Be safe.

Me tinks the Park Service really tries to get those cables up as quickly as possible.
Seems more and more and more peeps go up with them laying down (include yours truely) wink
(me gots my permitts this yr tho)

Now await the onslaught of don't go up with the cables down....
