Re: Tioga Pass opening?

Hello all. I know that the subject of Tioga Pass' possible opening date has been discussed here in the past week. I am starting to get anxious because I have a hiking friend coming from Germany to visit in Yosemite the week of June 14-June 19. Their entire trip is based around getting into Yosemite via Tioga Pass.

The official Yosemite site still says, "No opening date is projected."

I'm starting to really worry that Tioga won't be open by then. Thoughts?

Be prepared get into Yosemite via one of the other routes over the Sierras. Highways I80, 50, 108, 88 to name a few. Don't know where you are coming from on the east side of the Sierras but I would strongly figure an additional 4 to 6 hours of travel time. It will depend on your starting point.

The road is plowed through but a certain amount of repair work, hazard removal, and avalanche danger mitigation must happen first. You can be sure all that can be done is being done. The 14th is almost two weeks away and I would guess you have a good chance of being able to come through on 120 but have a backup plan.

I know rumors are crazy, but I just read from a reliable source that the unofficial word is it will open tomorrow, June 4th, at noon. My parents did go to the east gate this past saturday and they said there is lots of snow, but the road was clear and easy to drive up there.

I sure hope this is true. My friend from Germany has seen the Valley Floor countless times, but wants to see the High Country, which is also my favorite part of the park to hike in and just admire. Thanks... keeping fingers crossed.

Almost. It's June 5th.

Tioga Road, the continuation of Hwy 120 across the Sierra Nevada is open. Tuolumne Meadows Grocery Store and the Sport Shop are operating from 8AM to 5PM daily, Gas is available 24 hours by credit card. Tuolumne Meadows Lodge is scheduled to open Friday June 12.
