I have not seen any mosquito during my yesterday’s Half Dome hike.
However an insect (I have not seen it) has bitten my forearm on the top of Sub Dome:

There is no swelling and it’s not itching.

What kind of insect could it be?
I do not have that kind of reaction to mosquito bites. Black fly bites are of about the same size, itching and swollen.
I saw some wasps down at the valley, but not on the Half Dome ridge.

Any pain?

I do not feel anything right now.
At the beginning there was a slinght stinging pain which has gone away in few minutes.

And you never noticed when it was happening?

I did not see anything.
However I felt the sting and tried to rub my forearm.
I have not noticed anything there at that time.

What is "biting fly"? How does it look?
I noticed a few flies at a lower elevation.

It seems that this was kind of unique Yosemite experience smiling smiley and that most people were not bitten by insects there.

Today the same thing happened to me. The sting became swollen and it is now red like yours and it hurts. Did you ever find out what kind of insect it was and how long did the redness last?

Might have been a deer fly.

I read up on a deer fly and it appears that this is most likely what it was. Thank you!

Radioactive mosquitoes!! Stayed at LYV for 3 nights and the mosquitoes followed us up to the last straight stretch to the sub-dome. This was at 5 am in the morning though. Sunrise climb. Hikers were still complaining about them at 9 am on our way down. Just kidding about the radioactive part!! Do hope it is better by now .
