A few simple questions
June 16, 2010 10:09AM
I've been going to Yosemite since I was about 4 years old (43 now) but the vast majority of it has been high-country and north of the 120 stuff, so I'm not all that familiar with things in other places. To whit:

A. Has anyone been to the Nelder Grove, and how worthwhile is it, from a photography point of view?
B. Is there any trail/route to get into the middle cascades area of Yosemite falls? Is it even permitted to do so? If so, how technical is it?

Thanks!

Bumping this to the top (obviously not simple questions).

Hopefully whatever will take a look and have an answer to B.

The only place you would get a fine would be areas closed due to
the ESA afaik. They would probably try to dissuade you if you asked tho.

Thanks! Just found this link, which describes a very technical way of getting up there, but since they're all primarily rock climbers, they don't really have any photos of the middle (they call it 'Inner Falls') cascades: http://www.supertopo.com/tr/The-Inner-Falls/t10665n.html

I'm curious (and will check it out in a few weeks) about taking the normal YF trail about 1/2 up to where that long scree-and-tree field descends, apparently almost directly, into the middle cascases area, going west to east.

Yeah, I saw that too. Have never take then time to explore it though. It might have a 20 ft. drop somewhere
where you can't get down. However, it doesn't take much to be able to get to many places.
We're just ants out there.

Let us know how it goes.

Will do.

Google Earth doesn't let me get close enough to be sure with any certainty about where there might be drop offs, but I can't help have the feeling that access might not be the issue as to why there are almost zero pics of the area. Huge amounts of mist, perhaps? Not that that wouldn't offer some great possibilities.

Nelder Grove is a one mile nature walk through some sequoias... it's a long drive for not much to look at. If you are going to Fresno Dome or some other area out that direction, it might be a worth a stop. If you don't like gravel/dirt roads and uneven pavement, don't go. The groves in Yosemite and Sequoia are worth the trip.

Is your question about "Fern Ledge"?

Awesome! I believe that 2nd link is exactly what I was looking for.

The first link tasted like chicken.

Actually there was a discussion of your hike buried in the middle of the Ledge Trail discussion. smiling smiley

The route into the cave is pretty trivial. I thought you wanted the middle falls.

Ok... adding to my above statement.
Thanks for the link vdrummer. Good stuff. Haven't seen that one before.

Cave is on the west. This area, if I didn't mention it above, definitely has seen it's share of casualties.

I did and do want that. That second link covered the middle falls, unless I'm having some sort of hallucination.

And, um, cave?

Huh?

I edited/added to my statement. The Fern Ledge is by Upper Falls. Even their pictures never showed the Middle Falls.
I think the cave is called Fern Cave or something like that and is on the west side of the bottom of the Upper Falls.
There is a "famous" photo of it... looking for it now...

Thanks again. The west side means, most likely, scrambling down that talus/scree field from the Falls trail.

And I'm just guessing that, due to what little I've seen, if one is in position to take shots like those linked to of the upper falls, it's likely a short hop down to the actual middle falls. But it's just a guess. I'll find out when I get there and post/link to what's there to shoot.

On edit: Just found this, with good info. http://www.summitpost.org/route/157954/yosemite-falls.html

Leave it to the incredible SP folks to post great info.

Please, in the future... do not put "simple" in the title.

(but ask stuff like that... this is how I learn a lot of stuff and other cool places to explore!)

No problem. That's how I found out about a LOT of stuff on the east side: asking about all the things that are visible, but whose access points aren't necessarily so.

In fact, I'll be at Horseshoe Meadows tomorrow at dawn.

The Yosemite trip is right after that.
